I am a strategist, planner and collaborator with 20 years of experience in strategic planning, the majority in higher education. My work focuses on strategy development, using data to develop insights and inform decision-making, achieving clarity on priorities and intended outcomes, and enabling decision makers to utilise a range of planning tools to spark creativity, achieve impact and address risk.
I particularly enjoy the challenge of bringing multiple stakeholders together to fully understand a context and navigate a route to agreeing a collective vision, strategy and approach.
In recent years I have worked as a Director of Strategic Planning at the Universities of Central Lancashire, Hull and Wolverhampton; and have provided consultancy services to several universities on topics related to:
• strategy development
• translating strategy into operational planning
• performance assessment (KPIs, use of internal and external data, including league tables)
• data (strategy, governance, maturity, quality and uses)
• establishing effective policy and market insight functions.
I have a strong interest in the ways in which data on higher education are used to inform the public narrative about the sector and have served on related government and sector working groups. I chaired the Higher Education Data Insight Group and was a member of the National Executive of the Higher Education Strategic Planners Association (HESPA) between 2013 and 2023. I have facilitated conferences and workshops on related topics and have authored publications for the Higher Education Policy Institute and HESPA, and articles for national and sector media.
Prior to working in higher education, I worked in strategy and development for multi-sector partnerships, focusing on economic regeneration and housing renewal, and in various youth and community work settings, particularly focused on information / advice and youth homelessness.
